April 25, 2004 By: Haley Corda Low-Carb Fast Food – Doctors Rank Ten Worst New Low-Carb EntréesIn a new report, nutrition professionals with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine have analyzed low-carb entrées from ten restaurant chains, finding that even items marketed as smart eating contain an excess of calories and dangerous amounts of fat. The ten most unhealthful entrées are ranked in order of worst to least bad. Ruby Tuesday’s Spring Chicken Salad tops the list with 1,161 waist-expanding calories and 98 grams of fat. Subway’s Atkins-friendly Chicken Bacon Ranch Wrap, which derives more than half of its calories from fat, is number ten on the list. See chart below for the complete list of rankings.
With the introduction of these fat-laden, high-calorie menu items, carbophobia is clearly overtaking common sense, says Amy Joy Lanou, Ph.D., nutrition director for PCRM. A recent study shows that even one fatty meal can increase your risk of a cardiovascular event in the period immediately following the meal. A low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates is by far the safest and simplest approach to weight loss and long-term good health.
