June 02, 2005 By: Melissa Cameron Atkins Diet History – Three Decades Of ResearchDr. Atkins diet history spans from the 1970’s when he had completed years and years of research relating to carbohydrates and how they affect the body when controlled within the diet. Dr Atkins diet histories are largely based on his weight loss plans which are based on controlling the amount of carbs in the diet, mainly by excluding basics like bread, rice, pasta and fruit and increasing the amounts of meat, cheese and eggs. His books sold over fifteen million over the years and in the 1990’s, when the book ‘Dr. Atkins new diet revolution’ (originally produced in 1972) was released, the diet was made popular once again. At the age of 72, Dr. Atkins fell on an icy sidewalk while he was walking to work. He suffered severe head injuries and his spokesman, Richard Rothstein, stated he passed away at New York Weill-Cornell Medical Center. Atkins books record findings and research history, and assist the average person in reaching their target weight following a controversial yet effective four stage plan. The low carbohydrate diets and high protein diet has always been discouraged by health professionals, although no research to date has disproved Dr. Robert Atkins theory that controlling carbohydrates in the diet actually assist a person to lose weight and helps them maintain the weight loss for life. Despite the negative press surrounding the Atkins diet plans, so many copies have sold that his diet books and plans are some of the best sellers worldwide. The criticism occurs due to the claims that long term effects could be increase in cholesterol levels and kidney function can be affect health. Studies show that people have followed the plans without suffering any health problems.
