June 25, 2005 By: Melissa Cameron Atkins Diet Warnings – New Warnings Issued By DoctorsAtkins diet warnings have been announced by Doctors. The warnings are related to the low carb diet plans that Dr. Robert Atkins has made famous, by claiming that excess carbs in the diet is a real hazard and can cause diabetes. It follows years of research and years of negative press regarding the claims of those who follow the low carb diet plans. The new Atkins diet warning has been issued due to the plans increased popularity, largely assisted by some celebrities, and claims that the diet plan is good for the body and can help long term weight managment. The basis for the new warning is that diet plans, which are low in carbohydrates, can seriously impair the body’s tolerance to glucose, which can lead to diabetes. The information was released by Dr. Mann of the University of Otago in New Zealand as he spoke at the Heart Specialists’ Conference in Vienna. Mann also added, of the Atkins low carb diet that there was an observed incease in cholesterol. He advised that Doctors should still not be recommending the low carb diet plan as an ideal weight loss program. An additional hazard of the Atkins diet plan is that following the weight loss program on a long term basis can lead to diabetes as the body’s resistance to insulin is increased when a high protein/lower carb plan is followed. The condition is potentially life threatening, and deserves a warning. Doctors highly recommend a balanced diet teamed with lots of exercise to keep the body healthy and prevent disease. Many associations still do not recommend any fad diets, such as low carb or high protein diets which are potential health hazards.
