Atkins Induction Diet – Introduction To Atkins

Dr. Atkins’s diet books and plans contain the introductory section called the Atkins induction diet which is aimed at leading the follower into the diet gently. The diet plan is based on the theory that consumption of a high number of carbs in the body will prevent the body from burning fat efficiently, and also induce production of excessive amounts of insulin, which in turn will lead to weight gain.

By reducing the amount of carbohydrates, Atkins induction diets limit the consumer to, at most, twenty grams of carbs per day for a couple of introductory weeks, then increasing it by five grams per week, up to sixty grams per day. Following the success of four of Dr. Atkins best sellers, the induction is the first phase of the diet that should be followed religiously. The diets become more lenient as time goes by, allowing additional foods into the body and maintaining weight loss on the plan.

Atkins plans strictly limit or exclude foods like breads, pasta, fruit and starchy vegetables, and dairy foods such as milk and yogurt in the introductory phase. The diets advise the follower to eat unlimited amounts of protein from all meats, fish, eggs, butter and oils which are all low in carbs, and high in proteins. The vitamins required by the body are found in these foods.

Processed carbohydrates are also strictly limited, many of which are found in sugar, flour, and processed foods. Soft and fizzy drinks are not allowed, neither are alcoholic drinks containing high amounts of carbs.

There are a total of four stages in the Atkins diet plans, aimed at short term weight loss and maintaining the target weight for a life time.
