A Comprehensive Look At The Atkins Diet Plan! |
|
July 03, 2005 By: Melissa Cameron Atkins Diet Debates – The Argument ContinuesDr. Atkins, who passed away at the age of seventy two, completed many years of research, and released his findings in the form of books in the 1970’s. He has had four best selling books, recently challenging even the Harry Potter ratings. Though the Atkins diet is popular the Atkins diet debates continue regardless. In the Atkins diet debate, the numerous testimonials are all very significant, confirming that the diets do, in fact, assist weight loss while many skeptics have arguments that the weight lost on the program is from fluid. The diet plans seem to work for those who do not have time to exercise, but is it healthy? Although there is little evidence that supports the safety and effectiveness of a low carb diet plan, the first published study appeared in the 2002. The study was carried out by placing following an extremely low carbohydrate diet of just twenty five grams per day for six months, and was funded by the Atkins Center for Complementary Medicine. The results concluded that eighty percent of the patients stuck to the diet plan for the length of the study, and lost an average of ten percent body weight, the average being twenty pounds per person. However, the study did not confirm the safety and health risks associated with a low carb plan. Ketones were found in all participants urine who followed the plan, a byproduct which is found when a person has not eaten for a couple of days. As this is the first study of its kind to take place in two decades, more studies will have to be carried out to confirm related risks and benefits, and until then the diet plans debates continue.
