Atkins Diet Effects – More Research Needs To Be Carried Out

In order to determine the long term Atkins diet effects on the body, a study was carried out to obtain results on exactly how the body reacts to the extremely popular diets and plans that allow only minimal levels of carbohydrates per day. Body weight was measured, as were a number of other parameters such as metabolism.

To measure the Atkins diet effect, a group of fifty one people participated in the study. They were either overweight or obese, and were willing to lose weight. The patients were given low carbohydrate diets to follow for the duration of the study, each diet consisting of twenty five grams of carbs or less per day. The results were astounding, and have done little to disprove Dr. Atkins diet plan, but doctors still recommended that more controlled tests should be carried out.

Eighty percent of the diet plan group completed the six months, and the research showed that weight, body mass, and fat reduced although levels of blood urea nitrogen and cholesterol levels increased. No serious health effects occurred in those that completed the study following the diet plan.
