August 17, 2005 By: Melissa Cameron Atkins Diet Concerns – Conclusive Evidence Eludes CriticsThe fast food craze has resulted in more and more people are becoming obese, and the obesity epidemic is catching them at an early age. Fifty percent of the children going to schools were found to be obese or overweight. The reason being bad eating habits. To get slimmer and to stay fit people are opting for a variety of diets. These fad diets include the famous Atkins diet, propagated by the Late Dr. Atkins. The books written by Dr. Atkins and others on low carb dieting plans are bestsellers. However, people who are traditional in belief do not buy the low carb plan theories. In fact, many nutritional experts have raised several Atkins diet concerns relating to the diet plan. The primary Atkins diet concern is that high protein diet plans would lead to heart disease as high protein diets result in a lot of saturated fat. Other concerns include pressure on the kidneys, high blood pressure, and other related ailments. The nutritional experts suggest people eat lots of vegetables and fruits, whereas the Atkins diet plans limit the consumption of vegetable and fruits. The experts say that though people on low carb diets tend to lose weight, the weight lost is due to fluid loss and could hamper the body’s function. Though research has been conducted to prove the harmful effects of the low carb diets and plans, nothing has been proven conclusively. In fact critics say that if you follow a diet plan wherein you consume calories that total somewhere between 1500-1700 calories a day, and if you exercise, you will without any doubt lose weight. They argue that the Atkins plan and other fad diets limit the calorie intake to the range specified above. So it does not matter whether you eat food high in proteins or food high in carbohydrates as long as you limit your calorie intake and do your daily exercise.
