Low-Carb Health Risks – Many Disadvantages In The Diet

There are a few low-carb health risks that many of us know about, yet most choose to ignore these risks, and this could lead to both long-term and short-term health issues. A letter has recently been published which outlines the reasons that people often lose weight on the lower carb diets, and that the risks far outnumber the benefits.

A low-carb health risk study, as published by the Mayo Clinic outlines the real reason as to why low carbohydrate dieters are at a risk. According to the report, the main reason for their being at risk is due to ketosis that is induced when the person takes up such a diet. Ketosis, a state introduced by eating low carbs, happens when the body reacts to a diet as though it is being starved.

Ketosis is a dangerous state, according to those that conducted these studies. The ketosis induced state that the body takes up when following the lower carbohydrate diet is not a healthy state and mimics the state that patients suffering from the side effects of chemotherapy during cancer have namely, fatigue, loss of appetite and even nausea.

Following a number of studies, it has been deduced that low carb diets can actually clog the arteries leading to long term illness such as colon cancer, heart attack and even failure of kidneys. The reason that a diet which is low in carbohydrates is viewed as unsafe by the Mayo Clinic, is due to cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar being reduced. In fact, the person following the diet will actually have a lack of appetite and will take in less food products. Dieters can be at risk because they may become sick if they do not eat properly.
