Low Carbohydrate Sweeteners – Eat Sweets Sans Worry

The Atkins diet is the in thing nowadays; many famous personalities have endorsed this diet plan. This along with the fact that people lose weight and are able to maintain it has led to its popularity. The Atkins diet is a low carb diet; the dieters are allowed to intake protein in huge quantities, but the carbohydrates are restricted to a bare minimum. You are allowed only 15 to 20 grams of carbohydrates in a single day. This means you have to restrict your intake of sugar, as sugar equals carbs. The best way to do that is to use low carbohydrate sweeteners in your food.

What a low carb dieter goes to purchase a low carbohydrate sweetener, they needs to know that any ingredient that ends with “ose” means it is a byproduct of sugar and would increase the carbs intake. For example: sucrose, glucose, fructose, lactose. Sucralose sweetener, used in Splenda, is a byproduct of sugar and also ends with “ose,” but it is free of carbohydrates and also free of calories. Splenda is used extensively in many products like aerated soft drinks, iced teas, and candies. Other artificial sweeteners are aspartame and maltitol.

There are many products in the market that state "no-added sugar," or "sucrose-free." Please read the printed label carefully before buying jams and fruit drinks as these contain high-fructose syrups, which have the same amount of carb and calorie count as sugar. Be very careful while buying sweetener products, as you could end up not losing any weight.
