March 05, 2006 By: Melissa Cameron Atkins Weight Losses – Latest Studies Suggest Atkins Diet Is SafeAccording to latest studies on the Atkins diet, conducted by Southern Society of General Internal Medicine in New Orleans, a low carbohydrate diet is safe and helpful to lose weight with. The study corroborates Atkins weight losses. In another study conducted at Durham VA Medical Center in North Carolina, slightly over weight people on an Atkins weight loss lost nearly 21 pounds in 120 days of the diet. There was a loss in bad cholesterol levels and increased good cholesterol levels. In another study, around 41 over weight people who attended Atkins diet program and took only 20 grams of carbohydrates per day and also included vitamin supplements, fish oil supplements and 20 minutes of exercise, 3 times weekly. After 4 months of practicing the same type of diet and exercise, each participant 20-22 pounds weight loss and showed a 6 percent reduced level of bad cholesterol. Triglycerides levels also dropped to 40 percent. Good cholesterol levels also increased by 7 percent. The good news was that there were no side effects on liver or kidney functions. In 4 months time, there was enough evidence that Atkins diet losses lowered cholesterol and triglycerides levels in blood and raised good cholesterol (HDL) levels. In another study, 319 over weight patients were treated at least for 1 full year. Researchers collected information on blood pressure, cholesterol, kidney and liver function, and they found some very good results. The HDL (good cholesterol) levels went up, LDL (bad cholesterol) levels went down and blood pressure levels also decreased. With HDL level increase, there is less chance of getting heart diseases. LDL or bad cholesterol is most commonly linked with heart disease. About
