Atkins Product Catalogues – Get The Skinny

A summary of an article published in Catalog Age

This article chronicles the rise of the Atkins DirectTM catalog, which was established in the mid-1990s as a simple product list, and which now accounts for nearly 25 percent of Atkins Nutritionals' total sales. The catalog targets men and women aged 30 to 50 who are interested in losing weight or lowering cholesterol, says Karyn Leto, catalog manager. The winter 2002 edition of the catalog contains 40 pages and features about 25 new products. During the past year, Leto adds, the company has introduced about 100 products. In addition to the Atkins line of nutritional supplements, the catalog sells controlled carb foods developed by the Atkins Nutritionals research and development team in conjunction with Dr. Atkins and his staff of practitioners.

The catalog also sells controlled carb products from outside companies. The product line is extensive, ranging from controlled carb bread and soy milk to beef jerky. To provide superior customer service, the company trains its customer service representatives (CSRs) to answer nutrition-related questions. All CSRs are trained for three to four weeks before they're allowed to handle phone requests, says Leto. During that time, they learn about Atkins (including how to dispel certain myths about the program) and the Company's products.
