September 18, 2003 By: Mark Harris Low Crab Ice Creams – A Cool Treat For Those Hot DaysCoolBrands International Inc. is expanding into the business of providing ice cream to people on low-carbohydrate diets. The Toronto-based international frozen-treat maker said yesterday it has an agreement with Atkins Nutritionals Inc. to make and distribute Atkins Endulge Super Premium Ice Cream in the United States and Canada. The product "turns this favourite dessert into a healthy addition to the menus of the tens of millions of people who are now following a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle," CoolBrands said in a statement. "All Atkins Endulge varieties combine super premium quality and taste with four or fewer net carbs (carbohydrates that affect blood sugar) per serving," which the company said is 85 per cent less than other high-end ice creams. CoolBrands intends to have a full line of Atkins Endulge products in supermarket and health-food-store freezers next month. It did not disclose the terms of the agreement with Atkins Nutritionals, founded in 1989 by Dr. Robert Atkins to advance his philosophy of unprocessed high-protein, low-carbohydrate foods, vitamin supplements and exercise. "The addition of Atkins Endulge to our brand portfolio positions CoolBrands as the pre-eminent better-for-you ice cream company," stated David Stein, president and co-CEO of CoolBrands. "Better-for-you products are driving growth in the ice cream category." Other CoolBrands products include Yögen Früz, Eskimo Pie, Bresler's, Swensen's, Dreamery, Chipwich, Fruit-A-Freeze and frozen desserts licensed under the Godiva, Tropicana, Welch's, Weight Watchers Smart Ones, Yoplait and Betty Crocker brands.
